Bipolar 03 (2023)
Tracing back the origins of Nemes’s sculptural endeavours, the Bipolar series is the longest-running spatial trend in the oeuvre. Originally begun in 2022, this series is the simplest in its mechanics.
Similarly to its two predecessors, Bipolar 03 is a forceful, perpendicular structure that emerges from colliding planar and spatial realities formed of stainless steel, joined together by powder-coated, welded steel elements, and placed upon a travertine limestone plinth. Set in a natural environment with panoramic views enveloping the statue, the minimalist three-dimensional approach ruptures the green ambiance and strikes the onlookers with intense neon tones and metallic surfaces.
Razzle Dazzle 01 (2022)
The first member of the Razzle Dazzle series is a free-standing piece that uses vertical, planar elements, hinting at the planar properties of painting, moved out into space by tilting and bending the individual sheets in different directions. Optically rearranging one’s proprioceptive awareness by believing the planes are twisted, Razzle Dazzle 02 creates a spatially more extensive effect than the Bipolar series with the same colour tonality, sheer reflections, and metallic surfaces.
Wave 01 (2022)
Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake, neighbours the location of Wave 01 and served as its direct inspirational source. The volatile, flowing natural phenomena of the nearby body of water are unexpectedly cited in the sloped, diagonal arrangement of monumental, monolithic pillars. While retaining the language of strict and exact geometry, the choice of materials, specifically the translucent plexiglass embedded in gestural stainless steel encasements, express the undulating waves of the Balaton.
Despite the geometric certainty, the dynamic composition of Wave 01 mirrors the organic, fluid stimulus inspired by Balatonakarattya’s waterfront position. The tilted columnal composition evokes the entire colour spectrum of a lakeside sunset, depicting harmonious gradients with only a splash of fluorescent neon tones.
Superposed 02
The circular spatial composition Superposed (2024) was created for Nemes’s solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2024, where he represented Hungary with his vibrant, colourful, multisensory, and multimedia project titled Techno Zen. In the exhibition, techno, signifying both technological production or elements and techno music, rave culture, and escapism, meets the artist’s desire to find inner balance through abstract art. In this endeavour to interpret, contemplate and achieve Zen with and through techno, Superposed stands as the paragon of such introspection in the centre of the exhibition, from where the accompanying sound piece, dissected into low, middle, and high frequency layers, can be deceived. In Superposed, two large circles are erected on a circular base and are completed with delicately toned, powder-coated stainless steel gestural shapes. The inner circle rotates by manual power, making the sculpture discreetly kinetic and creating a focused moment of interaction for the viewer. The video shows the continuation of this series.
